![]() ![]() ![]() They can change and undergo chemical reactions, sharing electrons with other atoms. There are 92 natural elements and up to 118 when you count in man-made elements.Ītoms last a long time, in most cases forever. Each different kind of atom makes up an element. There are different kinds of atoms based on the number of electrons, protons, and neutrons each atom contains. Suffice it to say that the number is trillions and trillions (and then some more). There are so many atoms in a single human body we won't even try to write the number here. It takes a lot of atoms to make up anything. Atoms fit together with other atoms to make up matter. The basic particles that make up an atom are electrons, protons, and neutrons. Atoms are extremely small and are made up of a few even smaller particles. “Cellulose is a really recurring material that can reoccur much faster than, say, petroleum,” Brunato says. The atom is the basic building block for all matter in the universe. “We’re creating a sequin that’s a much more simplified material and can have this natural sparkle.” Instead, Radiant Matter uses cellulose derived from wood to create a natural iridescence without the use of dyes, petroleum, or metals. “They’re petroleum based and have dyes and chemicals and added metals to create the sparkle,” she says. ![]() We look at the way nature does it.”īrunato explains that the majority of sequins currently on the market are either made with PVC or PET, which are both plastics. There are no metal coatings on their wings. “We’re inspired by the way that nature creates sparkle: A lot of what we do is look at peacock feathers and beetles’ wings and butterflies,” says Elissa Brunato, the founder of Radiant Matter. Enter: Radiant Matter, a material-innovation company finding new ways to shine. It’s only appropriate that McCartney, a pioneer of sustainable fashion, would find a more eco-friendly alternative to regular old sequins. ![]() Designed by Stella McCartney, the formfitting piece deserves a closer look.
